She is noticed immediately by the sophisticated Dimitri Gurov (Aleksei Batalov), who arranges to meet her as she is walking her dog on the beach, and the two are soon enjoying an affair. They are both married, however, she to a civil servant ten years her senior, and he to a woman he does not love. They return to their families with the intention of never meeting again, but when their paths cross in the small town where Anna lives, they find they can no longer stay apart. Their love is forbidden, and they must decide whether to destroy their reputations by making it public, or to continue their dangerous, furtive meetings.
